In the safe space of Fair Barcelona Conference 2024, a very meaningful end of the day conversation and retrospective happened: Saniye Gülser Corat, Founder and CEO of NoBiasAI? and former Gender Equality Director for UNESCO interviewed by Marcela Ospina López, Vice President Sustainability & Culture Both.
Saniye Gülser Corat is the Founder and GEO of NoBiasAI?, a global think launched in 2022 with dual objectives: to reflect on a possible paradigm shift in AI from data-driven machine learning (ML) to knowledge-based machine reasoning (MR) and to develop gender audit tools to address gender bias in ML algorithms and datasets.
She served as Director for Gender Equality at UNESCO from September 2004 to August 2020. Prior to joining UNESCO, Gülser was the CEO of a global development consulting company (ECI Consulting, Inc.) based in Ottawa, Canada. In that capacity, she led development projects in over 60 countries. In parallel, she taught graduate seminars at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa.
A couple of takeaways:
Her initial work at UNESCO consisted of 3 circles: exterior image of UNESCO on the matter, the organisation itself, the individuals working at UNESCO
9% of the entire senior management at UNESCO were represented by women when she started working for UNESCO. When she left UNESCO, 51% in 2017 | 50% in 2020 was the percentage of women in decision management.

Cultural fluency is a must when you work in a certain environment
Artificial Intelligence is a fascinating and confusing field. GenAI today is experiencing gender biases. Data driven machine learning can't exist without gender biases. AI algorithms are already an integral part of our lives and they are full of pernicious biases. Especially gender bias.
